Dear Alumni of the Alpha Delta Chapter Chi Phi Fraternity,
The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately known as THON, is a year-long fundraising and awareness campaignwith the goal of conquering childhood cancer. These efforts culminate every February in a 46 hour no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon. More than 15,000 student volunteers dedicate their time and effort to THON, making it the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Our fraternity, Chi Phi participates in THON by fundraising and supporting children and families throughout their lifelong journey with cancer.
Now in Chi Phi’s third year involved with THON, we have raised over 35,000 dollars and rising! This past year we paired up with a dance team here at Penn State called Orchesis. We have really enjoyed combining efforts with the girls to make a difference in the THON and Greek communities. With their help we hope to further our fundraising efforts and make an even greater impact. So far this year we have held multiple fundraisers including the first annual Chi Phi Fish Fry where we had a live band, volley ball tournament, and of course fresh caught Perch. At this event alone we were able to raise $1,000. We are so proud of our efforts and thank you for your support. We hope you continue to support this great cause and donate!
It is now our second year paired with our THON family, the Garcia’s. Josiah, now ten years old, was diagnosed last year with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. We are so happy to say he is now in remission! He and his mother have become apart of our brotherhood this past year. They have come to visit as well as well as some brothers making multiple trips up to see him. As we build our relationship with Josiah and his mother, Erika, the inspiration of a family fighting for each day has greatly strengthened our efforts this year in THON. We as Chi Phi, THON for them along with all the other children and families that are affected by pediatric cancer.
For more than four decades, the THON community has worked tirelessly so that one day we will dance in celebration of a cure. To date, THON has raised more than $127 million for our sole beneficiary, Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Last year alone, THON raised more than $13 million For The Kids. THON continues to provide emotional and financial support to Four Diamonds children and families affected by childhood cancer. The THON community is also taking strides toward a cure by ensuring funding for critical research at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital.
As a fraternity, we are committed to spreading THON’s mission even further in 2016. With your help, every child can have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams. Please consider joining us in the fight against childhood cancer today by making a gift to THON in the name of Chi Phi. Please return your gift by January 29, 2016, or as soon as possible after that date. For your convenience, I have included a blue return envelope in this mailing. On behalf of the entire Chi Phi Fraternity and the THON community, thank you for your support of our organization and the fight against childhood cancer!
